To show up on Google Maps in New York, claim and verify your free Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate primary category, and make sure your name, address, phone and hours are exactly right. Then keep the profile active with real photos, regular updates and a steady flow of genuine reviews that you reply to. Google says it ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so your job is to make your profile the clearest, most complete and most trusted match for what people near you are searching.
In a city where there may be a dozen similar businesses within a few blocks, the details decide who gets seen. Here is what to do, in order.
How Google picks who shows up
Google has said publicly that local results come down to three things. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching, or from the area they typed. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business looks, based on things like reviews, mentions around the web and your website.
You cannot move your store closer to every customer, so distance is out of your hands. Relevance and prominence are where your effort pays off. In New York, distance is also tight: someone searching on Flatbush Avenue sees a very different map from someone in Midtown, so you are mostly competing with the businesses right around you.
Set up the profile properly
- 01
Claim and verify it
Search for your business on Google. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one. Google will ask you to verify that you are the owner. Until that is done, you cannot fully manage the listing.
- 02
Use your real business name
Write it exactly as it appears on your sign. Adding extra words like the neighborhood or "best halal food" to the name is against Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
- 03
Pick the right primary category
This is one of the strongest signals for relevance. Choose the most specific one that fits, such as a particular kind of restaurant rather than just "restaurant". Add a few secondary categories only if they are true.
- 04
Get the address, phone and hours exactly right
Match what is on your website and storefront. Add holiday hours before holidays. If you serve customers at their location and do not have a storefront, set yourself up as a service-area business and list the boroughs or neighborhoods you cover.
- 05
Fill in everything else
A plain description of what you do, your services or menu, attributes that apply to you, and a link to your website. A complete profile gives Google more to match against searches.
Show Google and customers you are active
A profile that never changes looks like a business that might have closed. Add new photos regularly, post updates about new items or seasonal hours, and answer questions people ask on your listing. Photos matter more than most owners think, because they are what people compare when they see several businesses side by side. Our guide to Google Business Profile photos that get more calls covers exactly what to upload.
Inside shots like the Gyro King dining room above help too. People want to know what a place feels like before they walk in, and a bright, current photo of the room does that better than any description.
Reviews: get them honestly and reply to every one
- Ask happy customers at the moment they are happiest: when the food lands, the job is finished or the item is handed over.
- Make it easy with a QR code on a counter stand, table tent or receipt that opens your review page directly.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and quickly. Future customers read your replies.
- Never buy reviews, write your own, or offer discounts in exchange for them. It breaks Google's rules and US law, and it can cost you the profile.
- Do not ask only the customers you think will be happy. Ask everyone the same way.
We go deeper on this in our guide on how to get more Google reviews the right way.
You cannot trick your way onto the map. You earn it by being the clearest, most complete and most trusted answer on your block.
Support the profile from your website
Your website is part of prominence. Make sure it shows the same name, address and phone as your profile, has a page for each main service, mentions the neighborhood and borough you serve, and includes an embedded map on the contact page. Link to the website from your profile, and to your reviews from your website.
Being listed accurately on other well-known sites, such as delivery apps, local directories and your industry's main listing sites, also helps Google trust that your details are correct. Check them once, fix any old addresses or phone numbers, and keep them consistent.
Finally, be patient and steady. There is no switch that puts a business at the top of the map, and anyone who promises one is not being honest. A complete profile, fresh photos, real reviews and a good website add up over time. If you would like a second pair of eyes on your listing, send us a message.
